Horse World Problems

As horse people, we often encounter things in our day to day life that other people would'nt. Most of the time these things are an inconvenience or they are just awkward.

How many of these can you relate to?

I don't know about any of you, but when you walk into a store right after leaving the barn, people tend to look at you as if you have the strangest outfit on. To me, I always thought that everyone knew what a horseback rider looked like, but some people just look confused or give you dirty looks as you walk past them. And if it's not the looks, you might hear them say something about the way you smell when they think you can't hear them.

I think we've all had a time when a friend asks us to hang out with them the same time you need to be at the stable. You'll say that you can't and that you'd love to do it some other time, but they just don't understand why you couldn't just skip the stable and get someone else to take care of your horse.

There's always that moment when you meet someone for the first time that knows nothing about horses. So when they ask you what you do in your free time, and you tell them that you ride, they will either say one of two things (or both): "oh so do you like jump? or do you do those barrel things?" or "oh, why? It's not like horseback riding is a sport, you just sit there and the horse does all the work."

To add onto the point above. I've also known people who are new to horses go home and research riding on the internet. Then, when they see you ride for the first time, they think they are an expert and try to tell you how you could improve your skills. They might say something like "slow him down, you're rushing the jumps. Come on it's not that hard to do".

So there are just a few of the #horseworldproblems that we all seem to face as horse people. You can watch the video from EventionTv below with more problems to add to the list if you'd like too. What other things could you add to the list of problems we face that other people wouldn't face?

I hope you are all doing well and thank you for reading Pure Horse Sense. Have a good weekend.

  Until next time, happy riding!

  1. I actually had a guy at a gas station in Albuquerque think I was a prostitute when he saw me in my riding clothes. He actually asked me how much it would cost him to take me to his place. Another time a lady proudly proclaimed "You must work with horses, you smell like them!" Then there was the time my fiancé went to Target in our barn clothes after a particularly rough day of work. Another couple walked around the corner, saw how dirty we looked, and quickly walked away. I'm assuming they thought we were homeless. So much for riding being a prestigious sport, huh?

In the end it doesn't really matter. These people will probably never understand, but they will also never be able to do what we do. I definitely understand where you're coming from though :)

    1. Thank you for your comment. It really is crazy how many different reactions you can get from people who don't know horses.

Like you said, it doesn't really matter how they react (just smile and shake it off) because they might never understand what makes our sport so special.
